{Date night at Borgo Trattoria and Things I’m Lovin’ Lately}

This past weekend, me and the boy finally had a chance to try the much talked about Borgo Trattoria (same owners of the now closed, Capo Restaurant in Inglewood). We arrived at about 7:30pm on a Saturday and as expected the place was at full capacity along with a huge crowd of people patiently surrounding the doorway waiting to be seated.

We were seated 20 minutes later at the bar and ordered a couple of drinks. The boy had a tall glass of Peroni, while I sipped on a full-bodied Pinot Noir.

The menu is set up in a shareable style, with every item priced by individual pieces or servings. This was awesome for us because we love the idea of trying small tastings of several items. This allows the guests to mix and match and order more of something they like. Excellent concept.

We started off with a couple Arancinirisotto balls topped with a creamy cheese fonduta ($2 ea).

Soft, gooey and creamy on the inside, golden and crisp on the outside. A delicious start to our meal.

Next we shared an order of the Scallop ‘crudo’ with lime truffle dressing ($5). Tender, melt-in-your-mouth slices of carpaccio-style scallops layered with micro greens in a refreshing vinaigrette.

Next came our first entrée, a generous portion of perfectly al dente Fettucine tossed with porcini mushroom cream and topped with grana padano and fresh arugula ($18).

Our second entree was our favourite part of our meal, the Braised Pork Shoulder with sweet and sour “agrodolce” sauce on a soft herb polenta ($12). The pork was fork tender and the richly flavoured sauce paired with the smooth and creamy polenta was a perfect complement to the meat.

Me and the boy were fighting for the last bites on this one.

For dessert, we went with a trio of gelatos. Tonight’s flavours included a summer sweet strawberry, tangy and tart lemon and a nutty pistachio. The unanimous favourite was definitely the lemon. The perfect palate cleanser at the end of a meal.

Overall, great food, great service and a busy, yet fun date night ambience. We’ll definitely be back.

For our ‘second’ dessert, we walked over to Caffe Beano to order my favourite winter drink, the chocolate ginger milk  – steamed almond milk melted with spicy ginger and shaved Bernard Callebaut chocolate flakes. The boy had a classic hot chocolate, equally delicious and satisfying :)

Enjoyed alongside one of their crackly ginger molasses cookies.

Officially full.

Some other noteworthy eats I’ve been enjoying this past month…

Blue Star Diner’s Smoked Salmon and Avocado Benedict on a cloudy Sunday morning..2 soft poached Sylvan Star eggs on a toasted english muffin and a dollop of creamy hollandaise sauce and red potato hash browns on the side.

While my lovely dining date enjoyed the Bridgeland Breakfast Sammy – 2 Sylvan Star fried eggs with bacon, fresh basil, Gull Valley tomatoes, Sylvan Star Gruyere, and homemade pesto mayo on sourdough toast. Served with local red potato hash browns.

Weekend lunch at Holy Smoke Barbeque and Smoke Pit for THE BEST chopped beef brisket sandwich topped with our choice from a selection of house made sauces. For dessert, one of their buttery and perfectly sweet mini cornbread loaves. Good thing I don’t know how to make these, cause I could definitely eat a whole pan full of these..

Half price pizza from Without Papers in Inglewood (after 9pm) with a wintery salad with roasted squash and apples dressed in a candied pecan vinaigrette. (I had the newly added “Good Girls Gone Bad” pizza: Roasted peppers, tomatoes, 17 shallots, fontina, cambozola, mozzarella and chili flakes.

*Funny story – the boy was thoroughly confused when I ordered this over the phone not knowing it was a pizza… umm.. awkward and hilarious)*

As some of you may know, I ALWAYS have a sweet after lunch and dinner, especially anything with chocolate. I’ve been OBSESSED with these lately post lunch..Fleur de sel caramels and fluffy honey sweetened vanilla bean marshmallows enrobed in a thin layer of dark chocolateoh yes..

Not to mention, how cute is the packaging?! Love it.

When I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised to find each wrapped individually in an array of pretty shades including dusty pink, Tiffany blue and the yellow ochre below.. Chocolate wrapped clouds indeed..

This past week my gym celebrated its Birthday this month and to celebrate, they offered members a selection of miniature cupcakes courtesy of the Brulee Bakery. I grabbed this rich and decadant chocolate ganache cupcake on my way out class.

They also make pretty tasty scones, like this Blueberry White Chocolate. The best part is the sugary and crisp golden crust..Perfect with my tea of the moment, a cup of loose leaf Earl Grey Cream tea.

After dinner, I’ve been indulging in a small mug of warm almond milk melted with a couple spoonfuls of this chocolate chai latte mix (what can I say, I am an absolute sucker for cute packaging). And it doesn’t end there.. Mixed in the chai powder mix are miniature chocolates in whimsical shapes like a bowler hats, stars, hearts, tea mug and other fun shapes. SOO CUTE!

I love little details like that. Puts a smile on my face every time I open up the canister. (Available at The Cookbook Co. Cooks along with the caramel marshmallows).

And lastly, I’ve been enjoying a few squares everyday of my bars of chocolate from my San Fran trip. My fave so far is this Basil and Persian Lime 65% dark chocolate bar (by Rococo chocolates). 

Fun fact: The inspiration for the packaging came from the chocolatier’s birthplace Teheran and the Moorish tiles and plants in the Marococo garden behind their flagship store in London’s Belgravia.

    Wow I had no idea Capo had closed. Clearly someone is out of the loop. Blue Star is definitely a place I want to try when I am back in town too. Looks like you have been eating well!
