{My three day juice cleanse experience with Total Cleanse}

My three-day Energize cleanse with Total Cleanse is over and I am happy to say I’m glad I did it AND glad it’s over. In the end, I ended up eating throughout my 3 day cleanse (snacks here and there) as I was still staying active and found I could not sustain my lifestyle with the juices alone. Instead, the juices acted like a healthy supplement to get me back on track. Here is an overview of my experience this past weekend.

Day 1 (Friday): I start off the morning with a glass of warm water with a squeeze of fresh lemon to wake up my digestive system.

8:30am: I arrive at work and crack open my first drink of the day, the Green Energy.

Ingredients: Cucumber, celery, kale, lettuces, parsley, lemon, apple.

Romaine is packed with nutrients such as vitamin C and Beta-Carotene which work together to break-down cholesterol. Romaine is a good source of potassium and folic acid. Potassium can lower high blood pressure and folic acid, which is a B vitamin, and converts damaging heart chemicals into other benign substances.

Cucumbers are good for your skin as they contain silica which can help to reduce irritations and reduce swelling. Cucumbers are also high in potassium, magnesium and fibre which can also help control your blood pressure.

Celery is an excellent source of vitamin C which helps to support the immune system. Celery has cholesterol-lowering benefits as well as potassium and sodium that regulate fluid balance, stimulates urine productions, thereby helping to rid the body of excess fluid.

Parsley helps to protect the liver and spleen and is a strong blood purifier and diuretic.

Kale contains phytonutrients which activate detoxifying enzymes in the liver that help neutralize carcinogenic substances thus helping to prevent against lung, colon, breast and ovarian cancer. The phytonutrients in kale also clean and detoxify our bodies, eliminating harmful compounds.

Initial thoughts? Considering how green it is, it’s not that bad. Definitely not something I would ever voluntarily choose to drink, but it’s bearable. Just gotta think of how this is healthy and doing me good..I found this one to be the hardest to drink because my body doesn’t seem to want it so early in the morning.

By 11am, my stomach is starting to growl so I open up drink number 2, the Lemonade.

Ingredients: Lemon, cayenne, maple syrup, filtered water.

This juice gives your liver a kick-start and contains vitamin A and C, selenium and zinc. It is high in water, so you won’t feel dehydrated half-way throughout the day.

Lemons help to break down calcified substances through-out the body, such as kidney stones and gallstones. Lemons are also high in potassium, calcium, and magnesium so they are an optimal choice to alkalize your body.

Cayenne pepper provides pain-reducing effects as well as cardiovascular benefits. It is also a stimulant that raises metabolism, increases circulation by purifying and thinning the blood, and helps many digestive disorders.

Maple Syrup provides the fuel you need in this juice.

I really liked this one, it was a little sweet for my taste, but the lemon and the spicy kick of the cayenne was surprisingly good. The heat of the cayenne helped warm me up in my icy cold office.

By lunch, I was starving and my second Green Energy was not appealing to me at all. I decide to go to the mall to distract myself with some shopping therapy. I was doing well, but by 1pm I was consumed with thoughts of food. As I returned to the office, I caved and bought a small box of greens and veggies with no dressing from the salad bar at the Sunterra Market.

At 2pm, I skip the Green Energy all together and go for the Lemonade. Late afternoon I grabbed a couple handfuls of soy nut trail mix to quiet my hunger pangs.

I arrive home around 5:30pm and make the boy a dinner of plump mushroom ravioli in a thick and creamy tomato goat cheese sauce.

I longingly watch the boy enjoy his dinner as I sip my 5th juice, the antioxidant and vitamin C rich Very Berry. Probably my favourite of the bunch (and the most normal tasting).

Ingredients: Strawberry, pineapple, blueberry, apple, lemon.

Blueberries are bursting with nutrients and flavour while being extremely low in calories and high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are nutrients in foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body’s cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as “free radical scavengers” and help prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.

Apples contain a long list of phytonutrients that function as antioxidants and support our heart. Apples are also high in fibre – both soluble and insoluble. Both types of fibre can help to keep your LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) under control and even lower it. The fibre also acts as a strong diuretic. Finally, apples contain large amounts of flavonoids. Flavonoids provide antioxidant protection that protect against inflammation, regulate blood pressure and lower the risk of heart disease.

Pineapples help with digestion in the intestinal tract and aids in digestion; it also adds a natural sweetness to your juice.

Strawberries, antioxidants and other phytonutrients are plentiful in these heart-healthy anti-inflammatory red berries. Full of the antioxidant Vitamin C and other important vitamins and minerals, yet very low in calories, no berry juice would be complete without strawberries. Strawberries contain antioxidant phenols called anthocyanins, which lend to their bright red colour and also help prevent cellular damage from oxidation and can assist in the prevention of disease.

At about 8pm, I opened my last juice of the day, the Creamy Cashew Milk, which I as really looking forward to.

Ingredients: Cashew nuts, vanilla, honey, filtered water.

Cashew milk is a vegan dairy alternative beverage derived from only natural cashews and water. Thanks to the moisture and healthy fats they contain, the result is a wonderful, smooth and creamy nutrient-rich beverage with a wide array of health benefits.

Cashew milk is loaded with B vitamins, magnesium and copper as well as phosphorus, selenium, and zinc. Cashew milk is also a good source of phytochemicals and antioxidants that protect us from heart disease and cancer.

Cashews are rich in protein and fibre and are cholesterol free. Cashew milk is loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins are involved in making red blood cells and are essential in the body’s metabolic activity. Cashews are also a good source of copper which is involved in many important functions such as removing free radicals from our system, developing bone and connective tissue, producing melanin, and the utilizing iron in our body.

Unfortunately, I found it had an odd taste that I couldn’t get over. I’ve made my own homemade cashew milk before (which I LOVE) and it didn’t taste anything like it. I tried warming it and adding cinnamon and nutmeg but it still wasn’t agreeing with my palette (maybe it’s just me). I sneak 2 bites of ravioli, brushed my teeth and off to bed I went, still hungry.

Day 2 (Saturday): I slept better than I have in over month! I woke up with a flat belly, refreshed and ready to tackle the day. I switched up the juices and drank #2 first, half of my Lemonade before my workout. I tried to do my usual two back to back high intensity cardio classes. The first class was great, but by the beginning of the second one, I was starting to feel light-headed, so I sipped the second half of my lemonade as my hydration to get my through.

About an hour after my workout, I HAD to get something into me, as the hunger was starting to make me feel faint.

*NOTE: It is recommended that you take it easy when you’re just doing a juice cleanse, but I ate throughout my cleanse as I knew I would be staying active*

As I was running errands, I gulped down my Green Energy and picked up a cucumber and avocado sushi bento box. I ate half and gave the other half to the boy.

The latter half of the afternoon was spent browsing around the “Christmas in Inglewood” festivities. The smell of gingerbread cookies in the oven and freshly baked buttery pastries from the Wild Grainz Bakery was absolutely intoxicating. Watching the boy enjoy free cookies offered at one of the local stores didn’t help either. I found myself asking him to describe what it tasted like..ah..so sad.

For a late lunch, the boy grabbed roast beef sandwich from the Spolumbos and not wanting to be left out, I ordered a small Italian tomato salad marinated in balsamic and onions to nibble on. Seriously, this tasted like the best thing in the world at that moment.

I came home, skipped my second Green Energy and went straight for the Very Berry. Mmm…bliss.

For dinner, I made the boy a pot of potato corn chowder with 2% milk, celery, onions, shitake mushrooms and a bunch of aromatic spices. I kinda just threw a bunch of things in there without measuring which is why I don’t have a recipe, sorry! ;P

I had a 1/2 cup of soup and soon after felt the urge to get back into the kitchen. I pulled out my spatula and mixing bowl and used up a couple of overripe bananas on the counter to make a loaf of banana bread (following my go-to recipe here).

I know what you’re thinking..I probably shouldn’t be baking when I can’t eat it, but I felt the process of making it somewhat helped satisfy my manic craving in a weird sort of way.

Within an hour, my house was filled with the warm scent of carby goodness…mmm… yes….I sprinkled the top with a handful of hemp hearts for some added protein.

I cut the boy a thick slice of the warm loaf and sampled a tiny sliver of the end, skipped my Cashew milk and went to bed and slept like a rock that night.

Day 3 (Sunday): It’s true what I’ve read from other reviews, as each day passes it gets easier. I even found the Green Energy for breakfast less offensive this morning. I awake with no craving for breakie and not really hungry (which is the complete opposite of what I’m normally like). I drink it like and champ and spend my morning packing and moving to the new house. Mid morning, I sneak into my purse for a handful of soy nut trail mix alongside my Lemonade.

Late afternoon, my hunger returns and I grab a 1/2 cup of the potato soup to hold me over till dinner. I was hoping to last till Monday, but since we missed our date night on Friday, we made up for it with a dinner at Joeys after we finished dropping off our excess clothes and appliances at Value Village.

The boy get my FAVOURITE item off the menu, the Ahi Tuna Club with a side of skinny fries – grilled rare, bacon, red pepper relish, arugula, panko onion rings (gahhh..torture).

I went with the Beach Salad - strawberries, goat cheese, quinoa, candied pecans, lemon poppy dressing (on the side) & grilled chicken breast. This ended up being mostly lettuce, with only a tsp of goat cheese and less than a tablespoon of quinoa :(

I’m totally gonna fess up now and admit to you guys that me and the boy totally indulged and shared an order of their irresistibly delicious baked apple pietopped with toasted almonds, hand-folded in puff pastry and drizzled with caramel sauce with maple ice cream.

Oh..come on, I’m close enough to the end, right?Gah..I told you I have no will power..sigh..I felt guilty. Honestly though, it tasted like the BEST thing in the world and I enjoyed each and every bite.

Day 4 (Monday): Since I had an excess of juices, I had another of the Green Energy juices this morning for breakfast and the Lemonade as an mid afternoon pick me up. Lunch was a yummy Lotus Bowl from Cafe Koi - fluffy white rice topped with a mound of maple chili stir-fried vegetables, toasted almonds and sticks of seared five spice tofu.

In the end, I did not end up drinking any of the Cashew Milks (which probably could have helped tamed my hunger, as it was the highest in calories). But even after all my snacking and my indulgent dessert on the last day, overall, I feel a lot better than before I started.

Here is what I’ve experienced since starting this modified cleanse:

  • The past few nights have been the best sleeps I’ve had in a long time. I’ve woken up before my alarm every morning (even on the weekend) feeling rested and energetic
  • My morning hunger is not as ravenous as it used to be and I haven’t craved sugar very much the past few days(which is VERY unlike me)
  • I went to the gym today after work with a ton of energy and feeling like I could do another hour. Compared to the past couple weeks, where I feel like I could barely get through one class, let alone two. I feel like this whole process has put me back on track to healthy eating and the weirdest part, I actually craved that Green Energy juice this morning for breakfast (what?!)
  • I’ve had little to no digestive issues during the cleanse, which I experience from time to time after heavier meals
  • My pants fit better (woo hoo!)
  • My skin has cleared up
In the end, I did not lose weight (which is good, cause I wasn’t trying to), but I did lose about an inch in my waist which was surprising. I think I would do this cleanse again on my own (using juice as a supplement with snacks) as a way to re-energize on a monthly basis. The service was super convenient, a bit pricey, but in the end, I think worth it for what I have gained from it.
I think this would be really beneficial post-Christmas and in the Spring as a way to reset my eating habits. I think I’ll also be incorporating green juices as a regular part of my daily breakfast with my home juicer. The amount of energy I have in the morning compared to how I feel after my regular breakfasts is definitely worth that extra effort. All in all, a good experience and happy I did it :)

    Very interesting. Good job for following it as diligently as you did. I totally agree with you, I need my sugar. When I get those cravings for something sweet, there is no stopping them! And I validate myself in the exact same way, I’m active and life is short, why not enjoy it!

    • It’s true, one thing I’ve always advocated is balance and as you can see from me not sticking to the plan completely, going to one extreme just isn’t sustainable for very long. Life IS too short to restrict ourselves, everything in moderation :)

    I’ve tried the juice cleanses before, and was not too impressed overall. I found that the smoothies definitely allow for a spike in nutrients, but they also provide an unnecessary sugar rush that mucks with your insulin levels. I also did not find any definite benefits – in fact I was more tired by day three, not less and I did not deal with deprivation well mentally. You would think that not eating for three mere days would not be so difficult, but food is all I thought about… :) Anyway, I do agree with the occasional green smoothie, easy on the sugars, but generally I prefer to eat my fruit and veggies and supplement with an antioxidant mix called Pure Synergy.

    • Yea, it was REALLY tough, I really don’t know how some people do it. I can handle adding juices to my existing diet for extra nutrients, but using them to replace a meal just doesn’t seem sustainable (or satisfying) for me. Salads are my go-to for all that healthy goodness. Thanks for the link, i’ll check it out.

    But I’m glad your energy levels are back! Also, do you take your vitamin D? I got tested recently, and was waaay below normal. Now I take 10,000 units per day, in liquid drops. My energy levels are much much higher.

    • I actually don’t take any supplements (except for Maca during training to keep my adrenal glands in check with the added stress of exercise). I’ve had tons of energy lately and have been able to go with less sleep too which is awesome. I will look into that though, I could be lacking vitamins too..
