{Dining out: Date nights at Wurst and Without Papers Pizza}

Friday date nights are my favourite night of the week.

Me and the boy both have pretty busy schedules during the week, so it’s a great way to take time out to catch up and relax after the work week and start off the weekend. And as much a I love to cook in my kitchen…its nice to take a break once a week and sit back and relax with my glass of vino.

Last Friday, we made resos at Wurst, a new Bavarian inspired restaurant and beer hall taking over the previous Wildwood location in the Mission area.

I’m ALWAYS hesitant to try out a new place shortly after it’s opened (grand opening was brunch the day before) since most restaurants need to iron our their little kinks in the first month. But the incredible sounding menu and our eager anticipation of the opening convinced us to give it a try.

The upstairs area still has that nice rustic feel, Nice and open with lots of natural light from their huge windows. The restaurant was PACKED that night, we had resos for 7pm, but we still had to linger about 15 minutes before we were finally seated. While we waited, we hungrily drooled over the dishes coming out of the kitchen trying to decide what to order and watched in awe as the bartenders filled up the 2L beer boots in the beer hall below.

We started off our night with a couple bevies. They took a little longer than usual, but we were in no rush. I had a glass of their Sandhill Chardonnay – Okanagan ($12) and the boy had their WURSTEST Dunkel, their signature house dark lager (the boy said it had a similar taste to his favourite Big Rock Traditional).

We were incredibly indecisive with the menu, since EVERYTHING sounded so good. But we finally settled on the Maultaschen to share ($13) – duck sausage, black trumpet mushrooms stuffed inside a thin pasta pocket in a rich jus and topped with grilled onions a Bavarian cheese crisp and chives.

I could have easily ordered this as an entrée! The flavours reminded me of something a German grandma would make for you at her home. Hearty, full of flavour, comforting and lick-your-plate good. A lovely balance of flavours.

For my entrée I had the Jager Schnitzel ($23) – meaty filets of breaded pork (or maybe veal?) presented in a cast iron oval cocotte topped with a thick and creamy sauce with earthy wild forest mushrooms, tangy creme fraiche and ribbons of lemon zest. Served with a side of classic herbed German spatzle and roasted baby root vegetables.

Hearty with home style flavours. This dish screams comfort food.

The boy had the Schweinshaxen ($23) – a roast pork knuckle served in a small cast iron skillet atop a bed of potato dumplings, braised cabbage and pan jus. The boy LOVED this dish and he said it tasted like the dish he had in Germany back when he was there for the World Cup Soccer.

Another round of the same drinks and we were STUFFED with no room even for a little dessert.

Overall, WURST definitely met our expectations, we thought the meals were reasonably priced, the service was friendly and the food was tasty, comforting and filling (like a good German meal should). A great experience and we will definitely be back for more. Perhaps next time for a bevie in the beer hall or a meal on their sunny patio.

Last night, we satisfied our pizza craving with our usual date night spot in our neighbourhood, Without Papers Pizza. I’ve already done a couple of reviews on this place, so I’ll just do a quick recap of what we had. 

The had a glass of their Verdejo (a white wine from Spain) and the boy had this yummy Root Beer Float, made with Canmore’s Grizzly Paw root beer and housemade vanilla ice cream.

Frothy, creamy and bubbly…something about floats that takes you straight back to childhood.

The server brought us our “pinch tray” before our pies came..consisting of chili pepper, parmesan and fresh chiffonade basil.

We lucked out when we arrived and managed to nab a small table right by the window. While we waited we watched one of my favourite children’s movies, Ratatoille projected on the wall and listened to the tunes of my favourite band, Daft Punk.

Seriously, it’s like they knew I was coming.

A short while later, our pizzas arrived fresh out of their fire engine red oven. I got my usual Shroom ($19- wild mushrooms, white truffle oil, fresh arugula and roasted garlic white sauce. I’ve gotten this the past 4 times we’ve been here.. and NO..I will never tire of it. I’ve been tempted to try other flavours, but why mess with a good thing.

Pure pleasure in every bite. It’s the crust I tell ya.

They make one killer crust.

The boy tried the new “Prosecuter” pizza ($17) – pancetta, caramelized onions, arugula and boccocini. A beautiful balance of salty, sweet and creamy.

We shared an order of bolognese dipping sauce for our crusts. And no..there was not one slice left on either of our plates.

What I love about the pizzas here is that they use just enough toppings so that you can finish a whole pie to yourself and not feel like you’re going to keel over when you leave. Without Papers is definitely our favourite pizza spot in town and we’re just lucky that we live only a few blocks away :)

And don’t just take me word for it. This morning Breakfast Television awarded Without Papers as the Best pizza in Calgary. Congrats you guys! Well deserved.
