We walked over to Inglewood to take in the annual Sunfest today. This event is a launch to the Fringe festival and features street performers, various vendor tents and food stalls all along the main strip of the neighbourhood on 9th ave.
I always get excited when I hear about a new bakery opening and I had read that the soon to be opened Wilde Grainz Artisan Bakery would be featuring a table at the festival. They make all their baked goods on site using local and seasonal Canadian ingredients. There are no additives or preservatives and they use traditional techniques for all their yeasted goods.
They offer a variety of different goodies including:
Breads (which take 3 days to produce), here are a few I’d like to try: potato rosemary and cranberry bread and the Grainz signature pear and walnut buckwheat bread
Tortes and tarts (chocolate prailine, banana chocolate souffle, marscapone cheesecake..)
They also make muffins, scones, loaves, brownies, cookies, granola bars and much more!
Their table featured a small preview of what to expect..
Today I picked up their Grainz granola bar. A mix of oats, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, almonds and cranberries. Rather than sugar, it’s sweetened with honey. This was a nice, dense and hearty bar. Packed full of different flavours and textures, not too sweet, which I liked. This would be a perfect hiking snack
I liked that it wasn’t greasy like some granola bars I’ve tried like at Urban Baker.
Next was a blueberry lemon muffin. Made with a base of barley flour mixed with fresh blueberries, lemon and applesauce. Overall, this was good, nothing special, the muffin was moist and the crunchy oat crumble on top added a nice texture contrast to the cake underneath. However, when I unwrapped the paper, about half the muffin stuck to the paper
(For taste and texture I still prefer the Brulee Bakery muffins over these).
This sticky cinnamon bun below came free with every purchase today. Score! The bun was a buttery brioche-like texture swirled around a layer of sticky caramel sauce. This was DELICIOUS, pull-apart-lick-your-fingers goodness. Really fresh too. This made up for my Lazy loaf and kettle cinnamon bun disappointment.
Wilde Grainz Bakery – 1218c 9th Ave SE. Open Wed-Sun 10am-6pm. Opening Saturday, August 7th.
Other highlights: Nectar makes PIES?! They were selling personal sized pies in various summery flavours like peach, strawberry rhubarb, triple berry and apricot. I really regret not getting one now
We also ran into the owner Kevin of Knifewear, gahh.. I love that store, in addition to their awesome knives they have the most beautiful cutting boards in there..
